Season 2008 - League News

Image Elsecar welcome Bradford League frontrunners Pudsey Congs to Armroyd Lane this Sunday. The match is a quarter final of the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy.

Pudsey came to Elsecar in the same competition in 2003 and a full house witnessed an enthralling contest where Elsecar’s Lesroy Weekes and Glenn Yates as the team amassed 258 for 4. Pudsey’s class shone through in the end and they came out on top by 4 wickets. Many of the players are still prevalent in both teams. Pudsey’s heros of the day were  Barbar Butt, Andrew Bairstow and captain Matthew Doidge certainly gave Pudsey something to think about.

The stage is set for another thrilling encounter.

Elsecar 284 for 7  Wath 120

Elsecar made sure they led the Premier table at the halfway point of the season with a resounding victory over Wath at Armroyd Lane. Elsecar were invited to defend first and after an early loss Tim Farmer and Ian Swallow delighted the Elsecar faithful by amassing 193 for the second wicket. Tim left at this point with 103 to his credit, including 13 fours and 2 sixes. Swallow saw the score to 255 when he became the fifth wicket to fall with his score an excellent 128 and including 16 fours and 2 sixes. Amil Prasad joined in with 28 not out to see a final Elsecar total of 284 for 7. Mark Wilson emerged with Wath’s best analysis with 4 for 51.

In reply Wath were left reeling from the ferocity of Elsecar’s strike attack of Lesroy Weekes and Amil Prasad. The innings score stood first at 36 for 6 and then 72 for 8. A period of stubborn resistance followed as skipper Rob Barlow dourly defended with Mark Barlow for 19 overs. The return of Weekes to the attack resolved matters and he removed the last 2 batsmen to see Wath all out for 120. Rob Barlow was still there at the close with 35 not out and Weekes took 5 for 26  with Prasad’s contribution 4 for 32.

Image Elsecar 258 for 8  Wickersley O.V. 257 for 6

In a sensational and thrilling Whitworth Cup semi final at Armroyd Lane, Elsecar achieved victory over Wickersley O.V. with 1 ball and 2 wickets to spare!

Elsecar asked their opponents to bat first and after an early loss, Haidar Jahangir and Alex Hughes built a second wicket stand of 114, at good pace. At this score Hughes left for a well earned 47. Asadullah Butt followed and laid about the Elsecar bowling with good effect hitting 33 in just 31 balls. Jahangir was the next Wickersley wicket with 109 to his credit. The Wickersley ace had fully displayed his silky skills with 15 fours and a six to the delight of the large Wickersley following. The Wickersley innings closed at the large total of 257 for 6. Lesroy Weekes was Elsecar’s best bowler with 3 for 31 in his 9 overs.

Elsecar set about their challenge well to begin with, but wickets fell regularly and despite 44 from opener Tim Farmer, the innings was falling behind the required score rate at 113 for 4. Glen Yates increased the pace by smashing 44 in the same number of balls but when he was the second victim to fall from a smart stumping from James Bentley the last of Elsecar’s known talented batsmen had left and Wickersley looked clear winners. Three overs later with the run rate soaring a further wicket fell to leave Elsecar at 208 for 8 with four overs remaining and 50 needed.

The Pedler Brothers
Chris Pedler (left) and Shaun Pedler (right)

This left the young Pedler brothers at the crease, 19 year old Shaun and 17 year old Chris. The next over Shaun hit a six and Chris a 4 and 12 runs were scored. In the next over only 7 runs came, without boundaries and this left 31 needed from the 2 final overs. In another amazing series Shaun smashed a six and a four and Chris contributed another boundary as 17 more runs gained left 14 needed from the final over. In an incredible final sequence, with Shaun in full ascendancy, he took the innings to a crescendo with 3 successive boundaries and the brothers scampered home to victory with 1 ball spare! The jubilant batsmen disappeared beneath a morass of Elsecar players and spectators. Shaun Pedlar had scored 37 not out from 24 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. Andy Harrison (3 for 60) and Haidar Jahangir (3 for 43) each took 3 wickets for Wickersley.

Elsecar now meet Treeton in an attempt to take a record 4th successive Cup win at Wickersley on August 10th.
