Pope Property Whitworth Cup – Semi Final Treeton 190 Wickersley 267 for 9
Wickersley pulled off the shock of the Pope Property Whitworth Cup competition when they beat all conquering Premier Division leaders Treeton in the Semi Final at Washfield Lane on Sunday. Treeton invited their local rivals to bat first and Shahid Hussain smashed 12 fours and a six as he reached 81. He featured in a stand of 103 with Scott Cunningham whose contribution was 7 fours ad 2 sixes in his 75. The 2 batsmen laid the basis for a good total and when the innings reached its conclusion Wickersley had reached the large total of 267 for 9. Gary Montgomery caused problems in the closing stages with a reward of 4 for 55.
Treeton could not find a similar partnership and although Steve Foster was in good form with 98, including 15 fours and 2 sixes no other batsmen reached 20 and the innings closed at 190 all out. Scot Cunningham bowled well to remove the first 4 Treeton batsmen for 34.
The win earns Wickersley a place in the Whitworth Cup Final on Sunday 9th August. At Phoenix C.C. Their opponents will be the winners of the Houghton Main – Whitley Hall semi Final scheduled for July 12th at Middlecliffe. |

STAFFORCE SOUTH YORKSHIRE LEAGUE WEEKLY CRICKET REPORT JUNE 27TH 2009
Premier Division
Treeton 143 Whitley Hall 93
Treeton stand at the halfway point of the season with 11 wins in the 11 matches played and with none of their opponents looking capable of either beating or catching them. The opposition at Washfield Lane were Whitley Hall who have finished the past 14 seasons in the top half of the Premier Division, but at the end of the contest were comprehensively beaten. They did look at one stage as though they threatened to upset the leaders but as with others opponents, Treeton’s increased strength in depth shone through and the challenge faltered and died once again. The crisis came when Treeton were 39 for 5 but at this point the diminutive stumper Paul Fenn was joined by Stuart Guy, who was on Yorkshire’s book last season, and these 2 transformed events. Stuart smashed 10 fours in his 55, obtained in just 59 balls. Guy was the last man to depart and the score had reached a respectable 143 all out. Paul Fenn had contributed 22 and opener Andy Tomlinson 24. Donovan Koch took 3 for 42 and Ben Webster 3 for 12.
Despite an early loss Whitley’s response was in good shape at 73 for 3, but the demise of their leading scorer, Steve Bethel at this point for 18 heralded the inevitable collapse and Whitley were unceremoniously shot out for 93. Gary Montgomery (3 for 24), Steve Foster (3 for 36) and Ben Ashdown (3 for 13) are proving an irresistible combination and with the impending return of Aussie Marc Carson most Premier batsmen do not relish any approaching fixture. |

The first 6 weeks of the season produced an exceptional crop of performances from Senior and Junior Players making the decision quite a difficult one. Jonathon Trower, Wickersley O.V.’s Captain took the award both for a excellent individual performance, his 26 fours and 178 runs at Darfield, and his 467 runs scored in April/May with 2 centuries and 3 half centuries. This saw him as both the Premier Division and the League leading run getter in the same period. The junior award goes to 17 year old Nathan Bailey-Davies of Wath Cricket Club for his outstanding performance taking 8 for 27 in 10.1 overs at Abbeydale against Collegiate. Despite his youth Nathan should pass 200 wickets for his club this season.
